Newstead Costume Collection Study Day

Updated: Mar 30

11.00am, 12th September 2022

Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire, UK

Since the dissolution of the Museum of Costume and Textiles, Nottingham, the collection has been moved 12 miles away to Newstead Abbey. There Judith Edgar is the Collections Curator, and she was able to give us a tour of the collection.

Judith shows us some items from the vast collection.

Shoes made for Queen Victoria.

We were allowed to get up close and personal with some 18th and early-19th century waistcoats.

1830s dressing gown, Kat and Viv explore the hat box room, and 1840s day gown.

On at the same time as our visit was the 'Nottingham Lace Places' exhibition, so we got to view some gorgeous lace garments, including a Victorian cutwork mourning capelet.

The garments covered a century of Nottingham lace.

After a brilliant few hours studying the collection, we finished the day with some tea, coffee, and milkshakes in the café.
